Hi! My name is Henry, and I’m a thirteen-year-old from Kentucky who loves gardening, piano, architecture, and being outdoors. I’ve been gardening for a while now, and I decided I wanted to start sharing my journey as I learn and grow. Being outside is one of my favorite things, and my family and I spend a lot of time hiking, biking, playing pickleball, and gardening—especially my mom and me. My late grandpa also played a big role in my love for gardening. He taught me so much, from visiting greenhouses together to picking out plants, and those memories will always stick with me.
I’m pretty organized and like to stay busy, so I’m often outside trimming, watering, or fixing something in the garden. I usually say, “There’s always something you can do in the garden!” Even though I have some experience, I’m still learning every day—and that’s what I want to share here. In my garden, I’ve grown vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, peppers, and herbs such as mint and basil. I also have flowers like geraniums, Russian sage, Knockout roses, and a peony (and more—check out my “My Garden” page for details). I’m hoping to grow even more vegetables this year and get better at keeping up with watering… because I definitely can forget sometimes 😅
Outside of gardening, I run my school newspaper, play piano, play soccer and golf, and help manage my school’s soccer teams. I also have two dogs, Rosie and Mabel, and a cat named Yoda. I also run a neighborhood lawn care business called Dirty Work Gardening, where I help with yard work and “do the work you don’t want to.” My goal with this site is to share my gardening journey so others—especially beginners—can learn alongside me.
Gardening to me offers a sense of relief, relaxation, and a break from the world around me. Planting plants feels like giving life, and taking care of it and helping it feels like you've accomplished something. Whenever I'm in the garden, whether it be planting, watering, or just a simple weeding, no matter how boring or time-consuming it may be, it is always so relaxing and peaceful to be outside. Some people's relaxing place may be in their beds, but I'm most happy and relaxed when I am outside in my garden.
